WCU Senior QB Todd Spitzer to Play in This Weekend's 7th Annual East Coast Bowl

Nov. 20, 2007

7th Annual East Coast Bowl - Nov. 24

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina senior quarterback Todd Spitzer has accepted an invitation to play in this Saturday's (Nov. 24) 7th Annual East Coast Bowl held at historic Cameron Field in Petersburg, Va. The annual game, which will kickoff at Noon, features the nation's top players off of teams not invited to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, as well as from the Division II and Division III levels of NCAA football and the NAIA.

The game is sponsored d by the City of Petersburg, The National Football Foundation and the American Football Alumni. Over 100 colleges and universities have been represented at the game since its inception in 2001 with Western as the first Southern Conference school to be represented.

Players will report to Petersburg the day before Thanksgiving (Wednesday, Nov. 21) and spend the holiday doing various community visits as well as practice sessions for NFL scouts. The game itself is set-up as a scholarship event, with all of the revenue generated going into a fund for a local high school senior who plans on attending a Division I-FCS, II or III college.

Spitzer, who transferred to Western Carolina two seasons ago after beginning his collegiate career at Cincinnati, finished his senior season at WCU by completing 101-of-176 pass attempts for 1,369 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Greer, S.C., native posted the longest scoring pass in the conference this season on a 82-yard pass and catch with classmate Eddie Cohen at Appalachian State.

Splitting time under center with red-shirt freshman Adam Hearns this season, Spitzer posted three, 200-yard passing games including a career-best 258 yards on 14 completions in the aforementioned game against the Mountaineers.

Spitzer is the first Catamount since Michale Spicer, WCU's all-time leader in tackles for loss, to participate in a post-season honorary game. Spicer accepted an invitation to participate in the 65th Blue Gray All Star Classic back in December of 2003.
