WCU Offensive Lineman Jason Whaley Gets Academic Honor

Cullowhee, N.C. - Jason Whaley, a junior offensive lineman at Western Carolina, was named to the Verizon University Division Academic All-District III Football Team for the second time in his career, it was announced today. However, this season, the Beulaville, N.C., native earned first team honors, after being named second team as a sophomore, and will be eligible for the Academic All-America squad.

Whaley currently carries a 3.894 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in computer information systems. On the field, he has started all 32 possible games to date for the Catamounts since his freshman season along the offensive line, including 10 this season at right guard. In addition to his second team Academic All-District III honor last season, Whaley has been Western Carolina's Male Student-Athlete of the Year each of the past two seasons, ending each year as the male student-athlete with the highest GPA. The two-time Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll selection is a member of Western's Honor College and the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. Whaley's play has allowed Western Carolina to pace the SoCon and rank 17th nationally in passing with an average of 256.3 yards per game. Also, the Cats' offensive line has only surrendered 11 sacks in 338 pass attempts, allowing just one sack every 31.7 pass attempts.

The Verizon University Division Academic All-District III Football Team is comprised of football players from NCAA Division I and I-AA schools in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Florida and Georgia. To be eligible a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 in the classroom and be a starter or key reserve on the field.
