Cullowhee, N.C. -
With Western Carolina's 17-7 loss to The Citadel this past Saturday, the Catamounts dropped out of the national top 25 media and coaches polls, but still garnered enough votes to remain ranked among the top 30. Western is in the 29th position in The Sports Network media poll, getting 172 points -- 75 behind the poll's 25th team Idaho State. The Cats fell to 30th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, getting 55 points -- 50 behind #25 Idaho State in that poll.
Western is one of six Southern Conference teams to get votes in this week's polls. Furman, who WCU defeated 41-21 on Sept. 10, is ranked sixth in the media poll and seventh by the coaches. Appalachian State is 16th in both polls, while Georgia Southern is 21st in the media poll and 23rd in the coaches poll. Wofford and Chattanooga, like Western, are listed in the others receiving votes.
