Cullowhee, N.C. -
Even though Western Carolina had its game with Nicholls State cancelled this past weekend due to Hurricane Rita, not playing did not hurt the Catamounts in the national rankings. In fact, Western moved up one spot to 18th in The Sports Network media poll and two spots to 19th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches, while the AnyGivenSaturday.com poll moved the Cats up two spots to 19th as well and Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette kept WCU ranked at 14th for the third consecutive week.
Western Carolina will not be able to make up its cancelled game with Nicholls State this year, leaving Western with just nine regular-season contests for the first time since 1970 when the Bob Waters-led Cats went 6-3.
The Catamounts will return to action this Saturday, hosting The Citadel at 6 pm in a key Southern Conference battle. The game will cap off a busy weekend on Western's campus as there is a Open House at 8 am in the Ramsey Center and a large crowd is expected due to Family Weekend.
