The Western Carolina Department of Athletics released its 2002 football schedule, which features five home games and a contest at Southeastern Conference member Auburn.
The Catamounts will open play on August 31 at Liberty, then travel to Auburn the following weekend (Sept. 7). Western's first home game will be Sept. 14 versus West Virginia Tech.
Southern Conference play for the Cats will begin on Sept. 21 at The Citadel. Western's first home league game will be Sept. 28 versus East Tennessee State, which will also be Mountain Heritage Day on the University's campus. After an Oct. 5 meeting versus 2001 NCAA I-AA finalist Furman, WCU will host traditional power Georgia Southern on Oct. 12. That same weekend, Western will induct its Class of 2002 into the Athletics Hall of Fame.
The Catamounts will travel to Wofford on Oct. 19 and return to E.J. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field to face Chattanooga on Oct. 26 as the campus celebrates Homecoming. Western will wrap up the season at VMI (Nov. 2) followed by an open date (Nov. 9) before closing the regular season versus Appalachian State on Nov. 16.
Western Carolina had a breakout season in 2001, posting a 7-4 record and a 5-3 mark in the Southern Conference. The Catamounts will begin preparation for the 2002 season on Tuesday (Mar. 19) with their first of 15 spring practices. Western will also have workouts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week. The Cats will begin full contact drills on Saturday (Mar. 23) and conduct their first scrimmage next Thursday (Mar. 28). Western is scheduled to host its annual Spring Game on April 13 at 5:00 pm. Also on Apr. 13, the Catamount baseball team will host the College of Charleston at 1:00 pm.
