Ricky Logo and Kris Reis Join Western Carolina Football Coaching Staff

Feb. 15, 2002

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina head football coach Kent Briggs announced that Ricky Logo and Kris Reis have been added to his coaching staff.

Logo spent the last seven seasons as on the Chattanooga coaching staff, serving as the defensive line coach. Under his direction, Tyler Unzicker earned second team All-American honors by Don Hansen's Weekly Football Gazette this past season, as well as being a consensus All-Southern Conference selection. Unzicker tied for the league lead with three fumble recoveries, was second to Western's Nick McNeil in sacks with a total of 10 and ranked second in the SoCon in tackles for losses (18). Logo also developed All-Southern Conference defensive linemen Kareem Robinson and Kenny Sanders, both of whom signed free agent contracts with NFL teams.

In 1999, under former UTC head coach Buddy Green, Logo held the position of defensive coordinator along with his duties as defensive line coach.

Logo played nose tackle at North Carolina State from 1988-92, playing three years while Briggs was on staff with the Wolfpack. While at N.C. State, Logo picked up several prestigious honors, including a Third-Team All-America honors. He was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and played in the 1992 Hula Bowl, the Japan All-Star Game and the East-West Shrine Game. He earned his B.A. degree in Sociology at N.C. State in 1992.

Following his collegiate career, Logo signed a free agent contract with the NFL's Detroit Lions. His stay with the Lions was shortened, however, as he suffered a career-ending injury during his first season.

A native of Columbus, Ga., Logo was a three-sport star at Spencer High School, excelling at football, wrestling and track and field. He was an All-State performer in football and was awarded the Columbus Coca-Cola Award as the city's top high school football player following his senior year.

As a prep wrestler, Logo went undefeated as a junior and compiled a 15-2 record as a senior. He also participated in the Georgia High School Track and Field State Championship Meet during his senior season.

Reis brings 12 years of coaching experience on both the collegiate and high school levels. Most recently, he served a assistant coach at Ledford High School in Thomasville during the 2001 season, where he worked with the defensive backs and was special teams coordinator. He helped Ledford reach the second round of the playoffs this past season and win its first conference title in 25 years.

From 1997-2000, he was an assistant as Greensboro College and North Carolina State. At Greensboro, he was passing coordinator, working with the quarterbacks and running backs, for an offense that averaged over 25 points and 300 yards per game, while his running back eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark. He was at N.C. State from 1997-1999, where he received his Master's of Education. In addition being the Wolfpack recruiting coordinator, Reis worked with the special teams, defensive backs and quarterbacks.

Reis had a two year stint (1995-97) at Leesville Road High School in Raleigh, where he coached both football and track. During the 1994 season, Reis was a graduate assistant at Drake University. He coached the linebackers there, producing an All-American, while heading the recruiting efforts and serving as defensive coordinator for the junior varsity. His first coaching experience came at Dowling High School in Des Moines, Iowa. He spent four years (1990-95) there working as defensive coordinator, offensive line coach, defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator during his tenure.

A 1990 graduate of Central College in Pella, Iowa, Reis was a Kodak and Pizza Put NCAA III All-American at linebacker, while being named his team's Most Valuable Player and Co-Captain in 1989. Reis is married to the former Karmen Leatherwood, who hails from nearby Candler.
