Atlanta Falcons Sign David Rivers

Atlanta - The Atlanta Falcons today announced the signing of four new players. LB James Cotton, DE Isaiah Harris, OL Michael Moore and QB David Rivers all agreed to contracts with the team. The Falcons also announced that they have re-signed practice squad players RB Jeff Chaney, OL Kris Farris, WR Jason Waters and S Twambi Settles. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed by the team.

Rivers was not on an NFL roster this past year, but did sign with the St. Louis Rams after his senior season (Spring of 2001) with the Catamounts. He spent the 2001 season playing for the British Columbia Lions in the Canadian Football League.

Rivers spent his first three years of collegiate eligibility at the University of Virginia where he played in 10 games from 1997-99. His best season with Virginia came in 1999 when he completed 32-of-43 passes for 271 yards to go along with three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.

Rivers transferred to Western Carolina his senior year and had one of the most prolific seasons in Catamount history in 2000, throwing for 2,878 yards. His passing yardage ranks second in the school's single-season list, as does his 208 completions. Rivers additionally threw 17 touchdowns, third-most in WCU history, with only nine interceptions in 350 attempts.

The Augusta, Ga., native was chosen to participate in the Senior Bowl and the Blue-Gray All-Star Classic. Rivers was named NCAA I-AA National Player of the Week (10/14/00) for his 474-yard, three-touchdown performance versus Wofford. He additionally was tabbed Southern Conference Player of the Week on two occasions. He threw for over 300 yards five times, including three games with over 400 yards.
