Winston-Salem, N.C. -
Three members of the Wake Forest volleyball team
earned All-ACC honors as announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference
office today.
Junior outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya was recognized by league
coaches as the conference's Player of the Year for her outstanding play
this season. Maso de Moya, who also was named to the first team
All-ACC, averaged 4.89 kills and 5.14 digs during the regular season.
She broke Wake Forest records in kills and digs in a single match,
registering 31 kills in a November 10 match versus Virginia and 44 digs
in an October 13 match at North Carolina. She was named to the All-ACC
Freshman team following her rookie season and earned first team All-ACC
honors last season as a sophomore. It marks the first time in Wake
Forest history that a Deacon has been named Player of the Year in the
ACC.
Junior middle hitter Margaret Davidson and senior defensive specialist
Heather Wilkie also earned All-ACC recognition. Davidson, who leads the
team in blocks and ranks second behind Maso de Moya in kills, garnered a
second-team spot for the second consecutive season. Along with Maso de
Moya, Davidson was named to the All-ACC Freshman team. She leads the
Deacons in attack percentage, with a .329 success rate. She records an
average of 1.06 blocks per game - the only Deacon to average over one
block per game. Davidson averages 3.56 kills per game and was named to
the All-Tournament teams at the Deacon Invitational and the Marshall
Invitational this season.
It marks the first time that Heather Wilkie has earned top honors in the
ACC. As one of the co-captains of the 2000 volleyball team, Wilkie is
one of the key elements in the Deacon defense. She has played in 221
games and all 94 Wake Forest matches during her career. She has
registered double-figure dig totals in seven matches, including an
18-dig night at North Carolina.
Wake Forest, seeded third in the 2000 ACC Volleyball Championships, is
set to take on No. 6 Virginia at 7:00 pm on Friday, November 17 at
Reynolds Gym. The Deacons, who will take on two more opponents in a
post-ACC Tournament event in California, have amassed a 19-8, 10-6
record thus far. Wake Forest hosts the entire ACC Tournament November
16-19, with the championship match to be played on Sunday at 3:30 pm.
