Wake Forest Women's Track & Field Earns Academic Honors

July 2, 2003

The Wake Forest women's track & field team earned All-Academic team honors from the United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) for NCAA Division I indoor and outdoor track & field again this year. Anna Sherman and Kara Mullin were named Academic All-Americans by the USTCA along with Anne Bersagel, who is a two-time selection now.

The combined grade point average of the Wake Forest women's track & field team for the spring 2003 semester was 3.101 and teams needed a 3.0 to qualify for the All-Academic team honor.

Individuals that met an automatic or provisional qualifying standard for the most recent NCAA Indoor Championships or a regional qualifying standard for the most recent NCAA Outdoor Championships in addition to having at least a 3.25 GPA qualify for USTCA Academic All-America honors.

Bersagel, a distance runner from Greeley, Colo., earned All-America honors three times her sophomore year and was a third-team Verizon Academic All-American as well. In the fall she led the women's cross country team to the ACC Championship, NCAA Southeast Region Championship and a ninth place finish at the NCAA Championship. Bersagel earned All-ACC, All-Southeast Region and All-American honors in the cross country season and was also picked to the USTCA Women's Cross Country Academic All-America Team. In the winter she automatically qualified in the indoor 5,000m with a school-record-breaking time. Bersagel picked up All-ACC honors in the indoor 3,000m and All-America honors in the indoor 5,000m. This spring Bersagel broke the school record in the 10,000m, automatically qualifying with the nation's fourth-fastest time of the season. She picked up All-ACC honors in the outdoor 5,000m and All-America honors in the 10,000m. A Political Science major, Bersagel has a 3.954 GPA.

Sherman, a distance runner from West Essex, N.J., provisionally qualified in the mile and regionally qualified in the 1,500m her junior year in addition to earning all-region honors in cross country and helping Demon Deacons to ninth place finish at NCAA Cross Country Championships. An Analytical Finance major, Sherman has a 3.382 GPA.

Mullin, a distance runner from Lake Forest, Ill., regionally qualified in the 3,000m steeplechase her junior year. An Elementary Education major, Mullin has a 3.533 GPA.
