WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest men's and women's track & field teams enjoyed a successful home meet as the Demon Deacons hosted the 2002 Wake Forest Invitational Saturday at Kentner Stadium. Wake Forest won 14 events in the one-day, ten-team extravaganza.

Carol Merritt won the 400m with a school record-breaking time of 55.67 and Nikeya Green was the runner-up with a time of 56.59. Adralyn Wendel won the 800m with a time of 2:15.82, Shauna Danos was the runner-up (2:17.06), Kara Mullin took third (2:18.27) and Tess Fath finished fourth (2:19.51). Fath won the 1,500m with a time of 4:38.31 and Anne Bersagel was the runner-up with a time of 4:40.56. Wake Forest won the women's 4x400m Relay with a time of 3:52.42. Sandra Jenkins won the shot put with a mark of 44-2 and set a personal record in the discus throw with a mark of 127-0 for fourth place. Jen Leesman was the runner-up in the shot put with a mark of 42-9. Cassy Richards had a pair of third place finishes in the 100m (12.54) and the 200m (25.05).

On the men's side, Cliff Neal won the hammer throw with a school record-breaking mark of 194-10 (59.38m), missing the NCAA provisional qualifying mark by just 1.62m. John Stone won the 100m (10.77) and the 200m (21.56). Mike Altieri won the 800m with a time of 1:52.91 and Nathan Sisco was the runner-up with a time of 1:54.52. Dave Barrett won the 3,000m steeplechase with a personal record time of 9:26.86. Zach Hamilton cleared 15-1 to win the pole vault, tying his outdoor personal record and Michael Eskind was the runner-up with a mark of 14-7.25. Luke Orman won the long jump with an outdoor personal best mark of 23-6.75 and was the runner-up in the high jump with a mark of 6-4.75. Alan Susi won the javelin throw with a mark of 191-00 and was the runner-up in the Discus Throw with a mark of 148-11. Brian Smith was the first collegian to cross the finish line in the 1,500m with a time of 3:59.27. Ryan Hamilton was the runner-up in the 400m with a time of 48.67. Branston Williams was the runner-up in the 400m Hurdles with a time of 54.82.

Wake Forest will return to action next weekend when a few Demon Deacons travel to Palo Alto, CA, to compete in the Stanford Invitational March 29-30, while the rest of the team will be in action at the Raleigh Relays March 30-31.
