Wake Forest Junior Karin Coetzee Advances at NCAA Singles Championship

ATHENS, Ga. - Wake Forest junior Karin Coetzee advanced to the second round of the NCAA Individual Singles Championship on Monday with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 victory over 70th-ranked Angela Buergis of Minnesota at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

Coetzee, ranked 29th in the most recent ITA Singles poll, will next battle 10th-ranked Alice Barnes of Stanford on Tuesday at Noon. Barnes not only played No. 2 singles this season and helped the Cardinal to their 13th NCAA Team Championship, but she was named the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Barnes entered the championship with a record of 37-6.

With the victory, Coetzee improved to 28-11 this season and 78-36 for her career in singles action. She moved into a tie for sixth place with Maggie Harris on the career winning percentage list. Harris went 109-51 (.681) over her four year playing career (1994-97).
