RALEIGH, N.C. -
Wake Forest junior Karin Coetzee captured her fifth straight singles match, while Coetzee and senior Liz Proctor won their fourth consecutive doubles match to lead the Demon Deacons past NC State, 5-2, in ACC women's tennis action from the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Complex Wednesday evening.
The Wolfpack entered the crucial ACC battle with the Deacs riding the momentum of two straight wins over Richmond and UNC Greensboro. But, Coetzee and Proctor did their part as the Demon Deacons picked up their second ACC win of the season.
The duo -- playing in the No. 2 doubles position for the first time this season -- easily disposed of Nandita Chandrasekar and Danielle Stadelmann, 8-1. With the victory, Coetzee and Proctor improved to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Junior
Danielle Schwartz and senior
Aimee Smith sealed up the pivotal doubles' point with their 8-4 victory over Augustina Arechevaleta and Jennifer Jassawalla, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles. Schwartz and Smith improve to 4-5 this spring and 2-0 in ACC play.
Wake Forest's top doubles team -- and 60th-ranked -- struggled in their match. Freshman Ashlee Davis and junior Katie Martzolf lost 8-6 to Kristin Lam and Barbara Orlay.
The Deacs took control of the match with four singles' wins -- three in straight sets. Again, leading the way were Coetzee and Proctor.
26th-ranked Coetzee -- playing at No. 1 singles -- had little trouble with 61st-ranked Orlay, 6-3, 6-1. Orlay had recently defeated 7th-ranked Amanda Johnson of Duke, but was overmatched by Coetzee. The junior has now captured five consecutive matches to improve her record to 10-6.
Proctor did not have as easy a time, but the junior was able to outlast Vania Apodaca, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. The victory snapped a two-match losing streak for Proctor and also gave her a team-leading 11 victories.
70th-ranked Davis -- in the ITA rankings for the first time of her career -- defeated Lam, 7-6 (7), 6-4, in straight sets. Davis is now 10-8 this spring overall and 4-2 in the league.
Smith was the final Deac to pick up a singles victory. Smith knocked off Jassawalla, 6-4, 6-4, in straight sets at No. 5. With the victory, Smith has now captured three of her last four matches -- all in straight sets.
The Demon Deacons return to action this weekend with a pair of ACC matches. Wake Forest will host Virginia on Saturday, April 10. First-serve at Leighton Tennis Stadium is scheduled for 2:30 pm. The Deacs will return the following day -- Sunday, April 11 -- at Noon against the Maryland Terrapins.
