WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Freshmen Ana Jerman and Christian Tara each won their singles matches to remain undefeated in ACC action and helped lead the No. 17 Wake Forest women's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over No. 66 Virginia Tech, Saturday afternoon in Leighton Tennis Stadium.
The win improves the Demon Deacons to 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the ACC, while the Hokies fall to 11-8 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
Jerman, who played in the No. 2 position for the first time this season, improved to 5-0 in conference play and 13-2 overall this spring with a tight three-set match against Anat Elazari, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Tara played in the No. 4 position and also improves to 13-2 overall and 5-0 in the ACC with her three-set victory over Ashley Long, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Ashlee Davis earned a point for the Deacs in the No. 3 position with a 6-3, 6-2, victory over JJ Larson, while Sierra Poske earned the only other straight set win at No. 6. Jenna Loeb played at No. 5 and came back from a one-set deficit to defeat Jessica Long, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Wake Forest earned the early lead, sweeping all the doubles matches, 3-0. Alex Hirsch paired up with Davis at No. 1 for the 8-1 victory, while Jerman and Tara played No. 2 and won, 8-5. Christine Simpson and Poske rounded out the sweep with an 8-3 victory at No. 3.
The Demon Deacons will close out their home season with a match on Sunday against No. 33 Virginia. Match time is set for 12 pm.
