WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest women's tennis team defeated No. 23 Notre Dame 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Leighton Stadium. The Fighting Irish split the three singles matches with the third-ranked Demon Deacons, but Wake Forest won two of the three doubles matches to capture the team point.

Wake Forest's top-ranked doubles team of Bea Bielik and Janet Bergman made quick work of Notre Dame's Katie Cunha and Lindsey Green, winning 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles match. Aimee Smith and Karin Coetzee teamed up to win the No. 2 doubles match for the Demon Deacons by a score of 8-6 over Sarah Jane Connelly and Alicia Salas. Notre Dame's Becky Barnum and Nina Vaughan defeated Danielle Schwartz and Katie Martzolf 8-6 in the No. 3 doubles match.

Bielik blanked Barnum 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match and Bergman handled Vaughan 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles match. The Irish fought back as Connelly beat Schwartz in the No. 6 match, 6-2, 6-1, Green won 7-5, 6-4 over Haus in the No. 3 match and Salas handed Martzolf a 7-5, 6-4 loss at No. 4. Coetzee iced the win for the Deacs with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Cunha in the No. 5 singles match.

Wake Forest improves to 16-2 with the win and Notre Dame falls to 11-8 with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action tomorrow, when they host No. 58 Michigan at 12:00 p.m. at Leighton Stadium.
