Field Hockey Heads West for Three-Game Road Swing in California

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team closes out its 10-game road schedule as it travels to California for a three-game road swing beginning Friday against Cal in Berkeley. The Deacs will also head to Palo Alto to face Pacific on Sunday, Oct. 14 and Stanford on Monday, Oct. 15.

Wake Forest has never given up a loss to any of the three Northern Cal schools. The Deacs hold a 7-4 record and moved up one spot in the rankings to third sitting behind No. 1 North Carolina and No. 2 Maryland.

Last Time Out... The Deacs are coming off of a 5-0 win over Appalachian State in which received goals from five different players and picked up its second straight shutout victory. Liz Fries scored her fourth goal of the season, while Regina Shannon, Minou Gimbrere, Chelsea Cipriani and Hilary Moore all notched one goal apiece.

About Cal Cal, which is receiving votes in this week's National Coaches Poll, are 10-3 on the season. The Bears' nine-game win streak was recently snapped on Oct. 4 when Virginia defeated Cal 3-0. Senior forward Jennifer Crane leads the team with 5 goals and 4 assists for 14 points. The Deacs are 4-0 all-time against the Bears - last season, Wake defeated Cal 5-1 in Berkeley.

About Pacific The Deacs are 2-0 all-time against the Pacific Tigers and have never allowed a goal in the two meetings with a combined score of 16-0 (6-0; 10-0). The Tigers are 3-9 heading into Sunday's game.

About Stanford The Cardinal hold a 7-2 record and kicked off the season with a 2-1 victory over then-No. 9 ranked Boston College. Senior midfielder Jess Zutz leads Stanford with eight goals and two assists, while Camille Ghandi adds five goals and three assists. Wake Forest
 

 

Next Time Up... The Deacs return to Winston-Salem for two Atlantic Coast Conference games to end the regular season. On Saturday, Oct. 20, the Deacs host Virginia and will host Boston College the following weekend on Oct. 28.
