Chapel Hill, N.C. - The eighth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team left Chapel Hill with a win on Wednesday night, shutting out second-ranked North Carolina, 2-0. This contest did not count towards either team's ACC standings. The Deacons moved to 5-3 (0-1 ACC) with the win, while UNC dropped to 6-2.

Junior midfielder Maria Whitehead opened the scoring 10 minutes into the game when she collected a rebound and deposited it in the goal. That was all the scoring for the first half, but the Deacons would get their insurance in the second. With 26:46 remaining in the game, junior forward Heather Aughinbaugh also got a rebound and also managed to put it past Carolina goalkeeper Amy Tran. The Deacons outshot the Tar Heels10-8 for the game.

UNC head coach Karen Shelton did not attend the game because she was attending the funeral of her mother, Judy, who passed away on September 7. Shelton will rejoin the team on Thursday.

The Demon Deacons return to action on Sunday as they remain on the road, traveling to Penn State to take on the 15th-ranked Nittany Lions at 1:30 p.m.
