The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams will open the 2007 outdoor season this weekend with the 49er Classic hosted by UNC Charlotte. The Deacs will look to carry the momentum of a successful indoor season into the outdoor campaign.
The Deacs are coming off All-American performances from senior Michelle Sikes and junior Michael Bingham at the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend. Sikes earned the award in the 3,000- and 5,000 meter runs while Bingham won his in the 400-meter dash. The women's team finished the championships in 18th, its highest finish in school history.
The 49er Classic kicks off on Friday with the women's hammer throw beginning at noon. The competition continues on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the men's shot put. Running events commence at 2 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.
