Track And Field To Compete At Alex Wilson

March 3, 2005

Winston-Salem, NC - Members of the Wake Forest track and field team travel to South Bend, IN this weekend for the Alex Wilson Indoor Track and Field Invitational. The March 4-5 event will take place at the Loftus Sports Center on the campus of Notre Dame.

"We are looking to improve on our season best times," said director of track and field Annie Bennett. "We do not get the opportunity to run the 3,000 meter race outdoors so we wanted to give two individuals a chance to earn a spot on the national descending order list."

Brad Wharton, who shattered Clemson's indoor record in the mile run last weekend with a 4:07.81, fell just short of the provisional qualifying mark in that event. He looks to qualify this weekend in the mile run at South Bend.

Michael Bingham, Willie Idlette, Mike Loyd and Eric Seely will also compete for the men's team. Bingham picked up All-ACC honors at the conference championship this season, with a third place finish in the heptathlon. Seely, also an All-ACC recipient, broke the school record in the 400 and 500 meter races this season, but has yet to set a qualifying mark in 2005.

For the girls team, Caitlin Chrisman, Melissa Council, Hanna Bremler and Michelle Sikes will run the distance medley relay for the Deacons. Council will also compete in the 400 meter dash and the 60 meter hurdles. Sikes and Chrisman join Annie Bersagel in the 3,000 meter race. Bersagel, who placed second in the event at the ACC Championship, ran a provisionally qualifying time of 9:27.09. Chrisman provisionally qualified at the conference meet as well, smoking her personal best with a 9:35.53.

Bersagel, in her first race back from a broken foot suffered early in the cross country season, captured first place in the 5,000 meter run at a meet in Boston, with a provisionally qualifying mark of 16:15.43. She earned another qualifying mark and first place in that event at the ACC Championship, earning her All-ACC honors as well. She, however, will not run in the 5,000 meter event this weekend.
