The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams will be in Blacksburg, Va., this weekend for the two-day Virginia Tech Challenge. The meet will be the final tuneup before the ACC Championships next weekend in Clemson, S.C.
The Deacs are coming off a weekend at the Carolina Classic that saw senior Michelle Sikes run one of the top mile races in the country this season. Her time of 4:44.83 was the 15th-fastest result in the nation as well as the fifth best in the conference. Sikes also has one the best 3,000-meter times in the country (9:15.33, 9th). She is ranked 10th in this week's "Dandy Dozen," a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA event as determined by Trackwire.com.
Other Deacs in the Dandy Dozen are junior Michael Bingham and sophomore Brent LaRue. Bingham is ranked seventh in the 400-meter dash by virtue of his 46.69 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational while LaRue is 10th in the heptathlon for his 5,480 points at the JRF Multi-Event Challenge.
Following this weekend's meet, the Deacs will compete at the ACC Indoor Championships on Feb. 22-23 at Clemson University's Indoor Track Complex.
