The Wake Forest men's and women's indoor track & field teams started the season Saturday at the Maryland Invitational in the Prince George Center. Jill Kolvacik shattered the school record in the women's Pole Vault, clearing 11-5.75 for third place. Sandra Jenkins broke the school record in the women's Shot Put with a mark of 44-0 for fourth place. Cassy Richards, a true freshman making her collegiate debut, broke the school record in the 60-Meter Hurdles, finishing 12th in the preliminaries with a time of 9.30. Cliff Neal won the Weight Throw with a mark of 59-10.5 - smashing the stadium record by more than 10 feet.
Jamie Grayzer took 19th in the 60-Meter Hurdles preliminaries with a time of 9.56 and Detra Chambers finished 28th with a time of 10.86. Richards ran a 9.39 in the finals, taking ninth place. She finished third in the 200-Meter Run with a time of 25.54 and Jamie Grayzer placed 28th with a time of 27.34. Chambers took 29th place in the 60-Meter Dash with a time of 8.40, Geneva Long placed 31st with a time of 8.69 and Erin Elmore came in 32nd with a time of 9.06.
Carol Merritt was the runner-up in the 400-Meter Dash with a time of 57.89, Lelie Crosland came in 36th place with a time of 1:06.13. Nikeya Green was the runner-up in the 800-Meter Run with a time of 2:15.27. Theresa Fath won the Mile with a time of 5:07.44 and Becca Veenstra took second place with a time of 5:28.22. Caitlin Dempsey placed seventh in the 5,000-Meter Run with a time of 20:16.95. Jennifer Leesman came in seventh place in the Shot Put with a mark of 42-2. The Wake Forest women won the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 12:23.48 and took fourth place in the 4x400-Meter Relay with a time of 3:58.29.
On the men's side, Patrick Reeves ran a 7.26 in the 60-Meter Dash to finish 24th and Patrick Ladapo came in 30th with a time of 7.53. Reeves placed 15th in the 200-Meter Dash with a time of 23.28. Ryan Hamilton ran a 50.26 in the 400-Meter Dash for ninth place. Branston Williams tied for 21st place with a time of 51.91. Josh Thurman took 17th in the 800-Meter Run with a time of 2:05.16. Michael Eskind finished 16th in the 60-Meter Hurdles with a time of 9.18. He took 12th place in the Shot Put with a mark of 40-7.75. Tom Tymann finished third in the Shot Put with a mark of 48-6.
Paul Singleton was the runner-up in the Mile Run with a time of 4:16.50 and Kevin Jones finished third with a time of 4:24.37. Jesse Richert finished eighth in the High Jump with a mark of 6-2. The Demon Deacon men placed sixth in the 4x400-Meter Relay with a time of 3:24.29. Zach Hamilton cleared 13-5.75 in the Pole Vault. Harold Thompson and Luke Orman tied for third place in the High Jump, both clearing 6-4. Orman finished fourth in the Long Jump with a mark of 23-5 and Thompson took 11th with a mark of 20-7.
The Demon Deacons will return to action on Jan. 13, 2002, when they will take part in the North Carolina Invitational in Chapel Hill, NC. Complete results from the Maryland Invitational are available at umterps.com.
