Eleven members of the Wake Forest track and field team qualified for the finals of their respective events on Friday on the second day of competition from the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Maryland. Juniors Michael Bingham and Kevin Marion led the way for the Deacs, qualifying in multiple events.
Bingham, a native of Burlington, N.C., had the fastest time in the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash. His time of 46.75 was more than a quarter second ahead of the next closest competitor. He also ran a seasonal best time of 20.86 in the prelims of the 200m to place fifth.
Also qualifying for Saturday's finals in the 200m was junior Kevin Marion who placed eighth in the prelims in a time of 21.12. Marion wasn't done there, running a time of 10.50 in the 100-meter dash prelims to qualify eighth as well.
Marion had a busy day in the field events also. The St. Petersburg, Fla., native placed third overall in the long jump with a leap of 24-2 1/2. The regionally-qualifying mark equaled his seasonal best performance from the Duke Invitational.
Also scoring for the Deacs in the long jump was junior Oderah Nwaeze, who placed sixth. Nwaeze used his final leap of the day to jump 23-8, also a seasonal best performance.
Also in the field events, freshman Thomas Sensing used a new personal best in the discus to vault himself into sixth place in the competition. The Franklin, Tenn., native had a throw of 157-02 in the event to break his previous best by over nine feet.
A pair of Deacs qualified for the finals of the women's 1,500-meter run as well as the women's 400-meter hurdles. The sophomore duo of Nicole Schappert and Allison Kieffer ran times of 4:34.13 and 4:29.29, respectively, in the 1,500m to qualify for tomorrow's finals while freshman Alexandra Gove (1:01.07) and junior Michelle Duffey (1:01.09) both qualified in the 400m hurdles. Gove's time was a new personal best.
On the men's side, freshman Keaton Morgan qualified for the finals of the 1,500m in a time of 3:57.22 while sophomore Phillip Warsaw ran a time of 53.01 in the 400m hurdles to qualify for the finals as well.
Additionally, junior Melissa Council placed sixth in the prelims of the 400m in a time of 54.83 to qualify for the finals in that event.
The Deacs were busy in the multi-events as well. Junior Molly Kennedy finished the heptathlon in seventh place with a point total of 4,784. The total was a new personal best in the two-day event for the Nashville native.
Wake also had two competitors in the decathlon: freshman Tyler Dodds and sophomore Taylor Wildman. Dodds was able to score in his first outdoor conference championship meet, managing an eighth place result with 6,312 points. Wildman finished close behind, scoring 6,215 points for ninth overall.
The men's team ended the day in ninth place overall with 15 points while the women were 10th with 19 points. The third and final day of competition from the 2007 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships resumes on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the women's shot put.
