CHARLOTTE, NC - The Wake Forest Outdoor Track & Field teams competed in the 2001 Charlotte Invitational Saturday in a final tune-up before the ACC Championships April 20-21. Cliff Neal broke the school record in the Men's Hammer Throw, Liz Washam broke the school record in the Women's Pole Vault and Carol Merritt broke the school record in the Women's 400-Meter Dash.

Neal, a junior from Winston-Salem, NC, broke his own school record in the Hammer Throw with a toss of 193'7". Garick Hill won the 3,000-Meter Run with a time of 8:26.39, the team's best this season. J.T. Thompson was the runner-up in the High Jump, clearing 6'4". Scott Holmes and J.T. Kuretich tied for second place in the Pole Vault, clearing 14'11", a season best for both. Matt Udvari and Luke Orman finished second and third in the Long Jump, with leaps of 22'2 ¸" and 21'9" respectively. Tom Tymann was the runner-up in the Shot Put with a distance of 47'3".

On the women's side, Liz Washam cleared 10'11 ²" in the Pole Vault. The sophomore from Newport news, VA, broke the school record by more than seven inches. Carol Merritt shaved a couple tenths of a second off her school record in the 400-Meter Dash. The freshman from Raleigh, NC, won the event in 55.88. She was followed by Summer Shaw, who took second place with 56.08. Sandra Jenkins was the runner-up in the Discus Throw, tossing it 113'4". Kara Mullin took third place in the 800-Meter Run with a time of 2:17.18. Jamie Grayzer took fifth place in the 200-Meter Dash with a time of 25.99, fifth place in the 100-Meter Hurdles with a time of 15.13 and 12th place in the Long Jump with a leap of 16'8".

The Demon Deacons will return to action next weekend when they travel to Orlando, FL, to compete in the ACC Championships April 20-21. Complete results of the Charlotte Invitational are available at www.flashresults.com.
