CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- The Wake Forest track and field team completed its final weekend of competition before the ACC Championships by splitting up and competing at the Charlotte Invitational and at the Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee.
On Saturday in Charlotte, Wake Forest got strong performances from its athletes who competed in the throws events. On the men's side, Josh Carter finished fourth in the shot put and sixth in the discus throw. Adam Gabrault's 50.26m mark in the hammer throw was good for third place, while Michael Hauck also turned in a third-place finish in the javelin event. For the women, Lindsay Neuberger continued her impressive season with a fifth-place mark in the hammer throw with a mark which broke her own record by 11 feet and she took home the discus title with a distance of 44.49m.
Some Demon Deacon runners also came up with strong showings Saturday in Charlotte.
Michael Loyd finished second in the 110m hurdles and sixth in the 200m dash with a 21.68 time. On the women's side,
Molly Nunn returned to action with a second-place time of 4:45.52 in the 1,500m event.
In Knoxville, Tenn. at the Sea Ray Relays over the weekend, Wake Forest's best finish was in the women's distance medley relay. Nikeya Green, Carol Lewis, Anna Sherman and Shauna Danos turned in a season best time of 11:12.91 which was good for first place in the event. The Deacon relay team defeated the University of Tennessee's foursome which was the NCAA indoor champion in the same event back in March. The two teams went head to head on each leg of the relay until Sherman pulled ahead of her Tennessee opponent in the final 200m. The time of 11:12.91 is not only a season-best, but ties the Wake Forest distance medley relay record to the hudredth of a second, a record which has stood since 1995. Three other Demon Deacon relay teams also took home top-five finishes in Knoxville while Lewis qualified for the NCAA regionals with her time of 54.60 in the 400m.
Wake Forest returns to action this weekend at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Chapel Hill. The meet will begin Friday, April 16 and run through Saturday, April 17.
