The Wake Forest men's and women's track & field teams were in action this weekend and enjoyed individual success across the board. While most of the Demon Deacons competed in the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, NC, a few Deacs ran in the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, CA.
At NC State, Carol Merritt broke her own school records in the 400m, with a time of 55.10, and the 200m, with a time of 24.16. Becca Veenstra set a new personal record in the 5,000m with a time of 17:57.30. Cassy Richards tied for 19th place in the long jump with a mark of 17-11.75. Sandra Jenkins had a top 20 finish in the shot put, reaching 43-2.5. Kara Mullin finished sixth in the 3,000m steeplechase with a personal record time of 10:49.08. Tess Fath took 12th place in the 1,500m with a time of 4:38.09. Wake Forest placed sixth in the women's 4x1500m relay with a time of 19:00.57 and 12th in the 4x800m relay with a time of 9:13.92.
On the men's side, Cliff Neal took third place in the hammer throw with a mark of 194-8. John Stone had a top 20 finish in the 100m with a season-best time of 10.64. Ryan Hamilton had a top 20 finish in the 400m with a season-best time of 47.76. Brian Smith placed in the top 20 of the 5,000m with a time of 14:44.50. Philip Wiles came in 11th place in the 10,000m with a time of 31:13.77. Fabian Davis cleared 6-7 in the high jump to tie for 16th place and reached 46-10.75 to finish eighth in the triple jump. Luke Orman tied for 20th place in the long jump with a mark of 22-0.25.
At the Stanford Invitational, Paul Singleton ran a 1:54.38 in the 800m. Nathan Sisco took sixth in the 1,500m with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:43.37, breaking the 10-year-old school record. Chris Estwanik came in ninth in the 1,500m with a provisional qualifying time of 3:43.63 and Mike Altieri finished 19th in 3:47.33. Anne Bersagel provisionally qualified in the 5,000m with a time of 16:40.43. Danielle Coon and Risa Rutland also ran the 5,000m at Stanford and did well, as Coon ran a 17:22.63 and Rutland finished with a 17:53.16. Nikeya Green ran a 2:12.25 in the women's 800m.
