Track and Field Closes Out Day One of Deacon Combined Events

Winston-Salem, N.C. - Three Demon Deacons closed out the first day of the Deacon Combined Events on Thursday. Freshman Brent LaRue completed the first five events of the decathlon and sophomores Melissa Council and Molly Kennedy both finished the first four events of the heptathlon at the meet hosted by Wake Forest.

LaRue holds the lead after five events in his first collegiate decathlon. The Kernersville, NC native took an early lead by winning the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.03 seconds. Pennsylvania's Kyle Calvo placed second in the event with a time of 11.09 seconds and Miami University's Kevin Dwyer placed third with a time of 11.11 seconds.

In the long jump, LaRue placed third with a distance of 6.87 meters. Wake Forest assistant coach Chris Boyles competing in the event placed first with a jump of 6.92 meters. Dwyer tied Boyles' distance of 6.92 meters.

In the shot put, LaRue finished in eighth place with a distance of 11.14 meters. France's Camille Vandendriesche took the event with a toss of 14.31 meters. Boyles placed second in the event with a distance of 13.66 meters, and Dwyer took third with a toss of 12.83 meters.

In the high jump, LaRue tied for fifth with a height of 1.89 meters cleared. Dwyer's effort of 2.01 meters won the event. Fellow Miami teammate Ceith Creekmur placed second with a jump of 1.98 meters. Duke's Tyler Clarke and Vandendriesche tied for third with heights of 1.92 meters.

In the 400 meter dash, LaRue blitzed the field running a time of 47.98 seconds. Pennsylvania's Max Westman placed second with a time of 50.10 seconds, and Clarke placed third with a time of 50.35 seconds.
 

 

LaRue has a first place total of 3,806 points. Dwyer stands in second with a total of 3,729 points and Pennsylvania's Mike Hall stands in third place with 3,534 points.

In the women's heptathlon, Council stands in second place with 2,715 points, while Kennedy sits in third with 2,708 points. The two Deacons trail High Point's Jasmine Jones-Green who has 2,756 total points.

Council placed first in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.85 seconds, placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.42 meters, finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 8.35 meters and won the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.89 seconds.

Kennedy placed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.01 seconds, finished third in the high jump with a jump of 1.48 meters, won the shot put with a distance of 11.91 meters, over two meters more than Jones-Green who came in second in the event, and placed fourth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.65 seconds.

LaRue, Council and Kennedy will resume their respective events on Friday at Kentner Stadium. LaRue will begin action at 10:30 am with the 110 meter high hurdles. Council and Kennedy will continue with the long jump at 12:00 pm. The Wake Forest Open will also begin tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 pm with the men's and women's long jump, the women's pole vault and the men's javelin.
