WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -

On a picturesque day that was perfect for a track meet, competition in the Deacon Combined Events got under way at Kentner Stadium at Wake Forest on Thursday.

Junior Molly Kennedy got her weekend off to a good start, finishing the first day of the heptathlon with 3,057 points.  She currently sits in second place after the first four events behind Nike's Lela Nelson (3,263), the 2005 NCAA heptathlon champion.

The Nashville native's day was highlighted by second place finishes in the high jump (5-3 3/4), shot put (39-11 1/2) and the 200-meter dash (25.85).  Kennedy also placed third in the 100-meter hurdles, the day's first event, in a time of 15.20.

Both freshman Tyler Dodds and sophomore Taylor Wildman were also in competition in the decathlon on Thursday.  After day one, Dodds is currently in sixth place with 3, 430 points while Wildman is in ninth with 3,275.  Penn's Kyle Calvo is in first by over 100 points with 3,798.

Both Deacs got their day started off on the right foot, finishing one-two in the 100-meter dash.  Dodds placed first in a time of 10.98 with Wildman coming in right behind him in a time of 11.27.  Dodds also claimed a victory in the 400-meter dash in a time of 48.98.

Wildman's next best result after the 100m was also in the 400m where he placed 10th in a time of 51.86.

Action in the multi-events restarts on Friday at 10:15 a.m. with the decathlon's sixth event, the 110-meter hurdles.  The heptathlon commences at 10:30 a.m. with the long jump.

Friday also marks the first day of the Wake Forest Open.  A full slate of action begins at 1 p.m. with the women's javelin.  Running events start at 1:45 p.m. with several sections of the Steve Brown 100-meter dash and 110-meter hurdles.

For Deacon fans, this weekend will mark their only opportunity to see the team in action on its home track this season.  Admission is free and open to the public.
