Deacs Take Advantage of Last Chance Meets

March 7, 2004

SOUTH BEND, IN.-- Two members of the Wake Forest track and field team competed on Friday and Saturday in the Alex Wilson Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame. This last-chance meet is designed to give top athletes from around the nation one last opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Wake Forest's Nikeya Green and Anne Bersagel took advantage of this opportunity.

Green took first-place Saturday in the 800m with a time of 2:05.31 which is a personal best for the senior from Woodbridge, Va. This mark also automatically qualifies Green for next weekend's NCAA Championships and is the first automatic qualifying time set by a Demon Deacon this season. On Friday, Bersagel competed in the 5,000m event and placed second overall with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:36.55.

In Blacksburg, Va. on Saturday, three more Demon Deacons competed in the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet held at the Rector FieldHouse. Sophomore Lindsay Neuberger's distance of 15.34m in the shot put gave her another provisional qualifying mark in that event. But Selina Sekulic (Mile) and Cassy Richards (Long Jump) were unable to qualify in their events.

The 2004 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held Friday and Saturday, March 12-13 at the Randal Tyson Indoor Track in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
