CLEMSON, S.C.-- The Florida State men's team and North Carolina women's team were the winners after 34 total events at the 2004 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Clemson, S.C. on Friday and Saturday. Both the Seminole men and Tar Heel women also captured the indoor team titles in 2003. The Wake Forest women's team finished in seventh place and the men placed ninth.
Wake Forest senior Nikeya Green led the way for the Deacs on Saturday, winning the 800m title with another NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:06.69 which was nearly two seconds faster than North Carolina's Alice Schmidt. Schmidt placed second behind Green on Saturday but holds the ACC's all-time best 800m time of 2:05.54.
After an impressive performance in the 5,000m event on Friday, Wake's
Anne Bersagel turned in the fourth-best time in Saturday's 3,000m run. Bersagel ran a 9:34.90 which provisionally qualifed her for the NCAA Championships in the 3,000m.
Michelle Sikes also placed in the top eight for Wake Forest in this event.
In the women's distance medley relay, Green, Sikes, Hanna Bremler and Carol Merritt Lewis teamed up and finished third overall with a time of 11:37.96 which provisionally qualified them for the NCAA Championships. This marks the first Wake Forest relay team to provisionally qualify this season.
On the men's side, Wake Forest's Michael Loyd followed up his outstanding performance on Friday by turning in the fourth-fastest time in the 200m dash finals and placing first in his section. He ran a 21.70 in the 200m, his third-best mark of the season. Loyd also recorded his fifth NCAA provisional qualifying mark this season in the 60m hurdles as he placed second overall in Saturday's finals with a personal-best time of 7.89.
The Demon Deacons will compete in several indoor meets over the next few weeks before the NCAA Championships are held on Friday, March 12th in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
