The Wake Forest University men's and women's track &
field teams got off to a good start at the ACC Indoor Track & Field
Championships Friday at Virginia Tech. The men's team is in second place
with 26 points and the women's squad sits at sixth with 23.5 points at
the end of the first day of competition.
The men's team won the Distance Medley Relay, breaking both the
school record and the ACC record with a time of 9:52.88. Patrick Ladapo
took sixth place in the 60-Meter Dash with a time 6.91. Ladapo, a
sophomore from Raleigh, NC, also ran a 22.24 in the 200-Meter Dash for
14th place. Ryan Hamilton came in sixth place in the 400-Meter Dash with
a time of 49.12. Paul Singleton ran the best time of the season for the
Deacs in the 800-Meter Run, taking second place with a 1:52.48 clocking.
Chris Estwanik and Nathan Sisco finished second and third respectively
in the Mile Run with times of 4:13.47 and 4:14.20. Wake also put a pair
in the top five of the 5,000-Meter Run with Garick Hill running a season
best 14:29.82 for second place and Ted DeVos finished fifth with a
14:45.54. J.T. Kuretich ran a season best 8.36 in the 60-Meter Hurdles
for 13th place. Kuretich, a junior from North Versailles, PA, also led
the team in the long jump taking 15th place with a leap of 21'10ä.
Da'Vaughn Mellerson took fifth place in the Shot Put, tossing 49'0.75".
Sara Day won the 5,000-Meter Run with a NCAA provisionally qualifying
time of 16:30.89. Day, a senior from Winston-Salem, NC, has already
provisionally qualified in the 3,000-Meter Run this season. Carol
Merritt broke her own school record in the 200-Meter Dash, finishing
sixth with a time of 24.38. Merritt, a freshman from Raleigh, NC, set
the school record last week on the same track at the Valentine
Invitational. She then broke a ten-year-old school record in the
400-Meter Dash, finishing fourth with a time of 56.09. Nikeya Green ,
Jill Snyder and Shauna Danos all took top-ten finishes in the 800-Meter
Run placing second (2:11.64), sixth (2:11.84) and seventh (2:12.78)
respectively. Snyder was also the runner up in the Mile Run, running a
5:03.20. The Deacons won the Distance Medley Relay with a time of
11:46.68. Rachel Burns cleared a season high 5'4.25ä in the High Jump to
tie for eighth place. Sandra Jenkins improved her season best shot put
to 43'8.5ä to take eighth place.
