Final Stats
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams were in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Saturday for the Carolina Classic, a one-day meet on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
A week after breaking the school record in the 3,000-meter run, senior Michelle Sikes turned in one of the nation's top performances in the mile. The Lakewood, Ohio, native ran an NCAA provisionally-qualifying time of 4:44.83 on Saturday to finish second in the race behind North Carolina's Brie Felnagle. Sikes' time was the second fastest in the ACC this season as well as the 12th best in the nation. Finishing third in the race was junior Caitlin Chrisman in a time of 5:05.06.
Also highlighting the meet were four Deacs who won their respective events. Competing in the 400-meter dash, junior Melissa Council claimed the top spot with a time of 57.79. Also winning was senior Brad Wharton in the 800-meter run in a season-best performance of 1:53.65.
Senior Lindsay Neuberger had a busy evening competing in both the weight throw and the shot put. The Virginia Beach, Va., native won the weight throw in a season-best toss of 53 feet, 3 3/4 inches in addition to finishing second in the shot put with a heave of 48-0 1/2.
The final victory for the Deacons came from freshman Marcus Dillon in the 3,000-meter run, whose time of 8:26.30 accomplished a season best by just five hundredths of a second. Fellow freshman Patrick Russell finished close behind in third place in a time of 8:36.42.
Freshman Caroline Vaughn continued her strong freshman campaign by finishing fourth in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles. After qualifying for the finals in a time of 8.97, the Atlanta, Ga., native ran an 8.92 in the finals. The time was just one hundredth off a school record in the event. Also competing in the 60-meter hurdles was freshman Alexandra Gove, who ran a preliminary time of 9.23, a new personal best.
Next up for the Deacs will be the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg, Va., on Feb. 16-17. The meet will serve as the final tune-up before the ACC Indoor Championships Feb. 22-24 in Clemson, S.C.
