Bingham, Sikes Break School Records at New Balance Collegiate Invitational

Feb. 4, 2007

NEW YORK, N.Y. -

Final Results

Wake Forest junior Michael Bingham and senior Michelle Sikes broke school records in their respective events on Satuday to highlight the second and final day of action from the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York, N.Y.

Bingham ran a time of 46.69 in the finals of the 400-meter dash to break teammate Eric Seely's previous indoor record of 47.43 set last season.  Bingham's time was good for third overall at the meet and was also an NCAA provisionally-qualifying mark.

Competing in her first meet of the season, Sikes ran a time of 9:15.33 in the 3,000-meter run to finish fourth and break Annie Bersagel's old record of 9:20.06.  Her result was barely off the NCAA automatic qualifying time of 9:15.00 and instead was a solid provisional score.

Personal records were also set by freshman Kim Vos and sophomore Robert Gielow in the 800-meter run.  Vos ran a time of 2:14.75 to finish 15th in the women's race while Gielow finished 16th in a time of 1:55.21 in the men's.  Competing in the 800m for the first time this season was junior Chris Catton, who finished 15th as well in a time of 1:55.15.

Running in the championship division of the men's mile, senior Brad Wharton finished 23rd in a time of 4:13.73.  In the college division of the same event, sophomore Mark Russell finished second (4:13.11) while senior Matt Owen came in eighth (4:15.48).

Running her first 3,000-meter race of the season, sophomore Allison Kieffer finished third in a time of 9:50.07.

Next up for the Deacons will be the Carolina Classic, a one-day meet in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Friday, Feb. 9.
