NEW YORK, N.Y. -
Day One Results
The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams were in New York, N.Y., on Friday for the first day of the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.
Junior John Compton won the college division of the men's 5,000-meter run on Friday, running a time of 14:45.68. The result was the second fastest time in the ACC this season.
Junior Michelle Duffey ran a personal best in the 500-meter run. Her time of 1:14.05, good for second place, shaved more than a second off her previous best time of 1:15.61 that she ran in last month's Virginia Tech Invitational. Competing in the men's 500-meter run, junior Aaron Russell also ran a personal best time of 1:05.29
Caroline Vaughn continued her successful freshman campaign, setting a new personal best in the 60-meter hurdles in a time 9.09.
In the men's 400-meter run, junior Michael Bingham ran a seasonal best time of 47.59 to finish seventh and qualify for Satuday's finals in the event. Also running was sophomore Brent LaRue, whose time of 48.34 put him in 19th place. Additionally, LaRue finished 10th in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 9 1/2 inches.
Both the Wake Forest men's and women's distance medley relay teams had strong finishes but barely missed NCAA provisionally-qualifying times. The women's team of Caitlin Chrisman, Melissa Council, Kim Vos and Michelle Sikes finished sixth overall in a time of 11:39.02, missing the qualifying time of 11:32.00. The men's team of Chris Catton, LaRue, Robert Gielow and Brad Wharton ran a time of 9:51.77, good for third. A time of 9:47.90 or better would have gotten them a provisional mark.
The second and final day of the New Balance Collegiate Invitational will begin on Saturday at 8:45 a.m.
