CLEMSON, S.C. -
Buoyed by a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash, Wake Forest sophomore Brent LaRue sits in fourth place in the heptathlon with 2,945 points after the first day of competition from the JRF Multi-Event Challenge at Clemson. Action from the meet wraps up tomorrow with the remainder of the heptathlon.
LaRue, a native of Kernersville, N.C., ran a time of 7.06 in the race to finish just behind Jangy Addy of Tennessee. Also competing were Wake Forest freshman Tyler Dodds and sophomore Taylor Wildman who finished the same race third and ninth, respectively.
In the second event, LaRue had a leap of 6.85 meters in the long jump to finish third. Wildman jumped 6.20 meters and Dodds 5.65 meters to come in 10th and 16th.
Following the shot put, the high jump rounded out day one's action with LaRue finishing tied for second (1.94m), Wildman tied for ninth (1.75m) and Dodds tied for 14th (1.69m). The three remaining events are set to get underway Saturday at noon with the 60-meter hurdles followed by the pole vault and 1,000-meter run.
Competing in the pentathlon, junior Molly Kennedy had a strong showing at Clemson as well highlighted by a victory in the shot put with a heave of 12.19 meters. The Nashville, Tenn., native started the competition off with a ninth place result in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.36 seconds. She followed that by placing fifth in the high jump (1.58m) and the win in the shot.
Kennedy placed seventh in the competition's penultimate event, the long jump, and rounded out the evening by coming in fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.98.
LaRue, Wildman and Dodds will complete the heptathlon on Saturday at Clemson while the rest of the Wake track and field teams will be in Lynchburg, Va., for the On Track Open hosted by Liberty.
