Loewenthal Falls In NCAA Singles Play

ATHENS, Ga. - David Loewenthal, a junior on the Wake Forest men's tennis team, was defeated by eighth-ranked and eighth-seeded David Martin from Stanford Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Loewenthal, who is ranked 56th in the Omni Hotels/ITA singles rankings, took Martin to three sets before losing 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Playing number one singles and doubles most of the year and nationally ranked in both all season, Loewenthal ends the season with an overall singles record of 32-17 to go with a 26-15 doubles mark.

Wake Forest won its first-ever NCAA Tournament match with a 4-3 first round win over No. 46 Brown before falling 4-0 to ninth-ranked and eighth-seeded Duke in the regional final. The Demon Deacons ended the season 14-9 overall, ranked 28th in the nation and 5-3 in the ACC for fourth place in the league.
