Loewenthal Selected For NCAA Singles Championship Draw

May 20, 2003

ATHENS, Ga. - David Loewenthal, a junior on the Wake Forest men's tennis team, has been selected to play in the 64-person NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship. The two-time All-ACC selection from Franklin Lakes, N.J., will square off against eighth-ranked and eighth-seeded David Martin from Stanford tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. in the first round at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Loewenthal, who is ranked 56th in the Omni Hotels/ITA singles rankings, was originally chosen as the No. 2 alternate when the singles seedings were announced May 1. More than one contender has withdrawn and Loewenthal will now be playing for the singles championship for the second straight year. Last season he advanced to the second round before falling in three sets to the top-seeded, number one ranked and eventual national champion, Matias Boeker from Georgia.

Playing number one singles and doubles most of the year and nationally ranked in both all season, Loewenthal owns an overall singles record of 31-16. He earned All-ACC honors for the second consecutive year and is an ACC Honor Roll member as well as a Dean's List student. Loewenthal has seven singles wins over ranked opponents, including No. 31 Lester Cook from Texas A&M and No. 46 Doug Stewart from Virginia.

Wake Forest won its first-ever NCAA Tournament match with a 4-3 first round win over No. 46 Brown before falling 4-0 to ninth-ranked and eighth-seeded Duke in the regional final. The Demon Deacons ended the season 14-9 overall, ranked 28th in the nation and 5-3 in the ACC for fourth place in the league.
