The 64-Player Field
Indianapolis, Ind. -- Todd Paul will represent Wake Forest in the singles draw at the NCAA Championships in Palo Alto, Calif., beginning May 24, the NCAA announced on Thursday. His first round opponent will be determined the week prior to the singles championship.
Paul, a junior from Stamford, Conn., is ranked 18th nationally and was one of 64 players invited to participate in the singles tournament.
The three-time All-ACC selection and 2004 ACC Rookie of the Year has held down the number one singles position as a junior for the Deacons. He owns a 26-12 record this season, including a 14-8 mark in dual matches.
Paul has been ranked between 10th and 18th all spring. He peaked at number 10 on March 7 while on a season-best six-match winning streak.
Seventeen of Paul's 38 matches this season have come against players who qualified for the singles field, not including wins against the field's top two alternates. In meetings against the invited 64 players, Paul registered an 8-9 mark. Five of those losses, however, came against opponents ranked in the top 10. His landmark win this season was against 10th-ranked Raian Luchici of North Carolina in March.
It will be Paul's first career appearance in the event. He is seeking to become Wake Forest's Singles All-American since Gilles Ameline in 1990.
Paul and his teammates travel to Charlottesville, Va., next weekend for the NCAA Team Championships. Wake Forest faces Kentucky in Saturday's first round at 1:00 p.m. The Wake Forest-Kentucky winner faces either 9th-seeded Virginia or Army on Sunday at noon.
Wake Forest enters the NCAA Championship with a 15-10 overall record and ranked 28th nationally.
