Deacons Close Regular Season At Home Against Miami, Florida State

April 12, 2007

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The 11th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team will complete its regular season this weekend at Leighton Tennis Stadium against Miami and Florida State. The Deacons' next win will break the program record for most wins in a season, set by the 1976 and 1980 teams.

Wake Forest hosts Miami on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and Florida State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

The Deacons (19-4, 6-3 ACC) could lock up a first round bye in next week's ACC Tournament with a victory against the Hurricanes. Depending on the weekend results around the league, Wake Forest could finish anywhere from third to seventh. The program's best finish in the last 25 seasons was a third place showing in 2002.

Wake Forest senior All-American Todd Paul has a major milestone in sight. His next win will tie David Bere's record for career singles victories with 106. Paul's likely opponent on Friday, Luigi D'Agord of Miami, is the nation's 20th-ranked player.  He has never lost an ACC singles match in his two-year career with the Hurricanes.

Miami (10-10, 5-4 ACC) come into the match ranked 33rd nationally. They boast the nation's eighth-ranked doubles team in Luigi D'Agord and Josh Cohen. Florida State (12-8, 4-5 ACC) is led by two nationally-ranked players, senior co-captain Ytai Abougzir, who is currently ranked 99th, and freshman Jean-Yves Aubone who is ranked 94th.
