March 24, 2006

Charlottesville, Va. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team dropped its first ACC match of the season, falling 6-1 at 11th-ranked Virginia on Friday afternoon in Charlottesville. The Deacons slipped to 9-5 overall, 2-1 in the ACC while Virginia remained undefeated in the league at 3-0 and 12-5 overall.

The Cavaliers won the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. At number three doubles, senior Brett Ross and Charles Sartor defeated Darrin Cohen and Doug Stewart 9-8 (3). But Virginia captured the two other matches to win the doubles point. At number one, Andrew Hamar and Todd Paul, who beat the nation's sixth-ranked team on Tuesday, couldn't handle 55th-ranked Nick Meythaler and Rylan Rizza, losing 8-3. At number two, 18th-ranked Treat Huey and Somdev Devvarman clinched the opening point for the `Hoos with a 8-6 win against Cory Parr and Mariusz Adamski.

In singles, the Cavaliers extended their lead to 2-0 as 9th-ranked Devvarman downed 69th-ranked Hamar 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

Wake Forest got a point at No. 1 singles where 15th-ranked Paul defeated 77th-ranked Doug Stewart 6-3, 6-4. Paul has won three straight matches and nine of his last ten, dating back to February 4.

Rizza extended the lead to 3-1 with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Parr at No. 3 singles. Cohen clinched the win for Virginia with his 6-1, 7-6 win over Liron Strauss at the No. 6 position. With the team result already decided, Adamski lost his match at number five and Ross lost a heartbreaking match at No. 4, 7-5, 7-6 (5).

Wake Forest continues its weekend road swing in Virginia. The Deacons take on the Hokies on Sunday in Blacksburg. Following the match at Virginia Tech, Wake Forest returns home to play six matches in 11 days at Leighton Tennis Stadium, beginning with Brown on Thursday, March 30 at 5:30 p.m.
