Men's Tennis Heads To New Orleans For Match With Tulane

March 8, 2004

The 56th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team (4-5) travels to New Orleans on Tuesday where they will take on the 40th-ranked Tulane Green Wave (7-3) at the Goldring Tennis Center beginning at 3 pm. In the only other meeting between the teams, Tulane took a 4-1 victory over the Deacs on March 16, 2001. Wake Forest has not played since Feb. 29 when it suffered a 4-3 conference loss at the hands of #55 Georgia Tech. The Green Wave is coming off of three straight victories, most recently a 7-0 sweep of conference rival Southern Miss on Friday.

With the Demon Deacons dropping their last two matches, Jeff Zinn will again be trying to earn his 100th victory since becoming the head coach of Wake Forest in 1997. Zinn owns a 99-82 record now in his eighth year at the helm for Wake Forest and is just five victories shy of 200 in his 15-year career as a head coach. With one more victory, Zinn will become the third Wake Forest head tennis coach to reach 100.

Wake Forest freshman Todd Paul has won his last four singles matches, including the last two after being moved up to the No. 2 position. The Stamford, Conn. native leads the Deacs with a 7-2 singles mark and has a team-best 20 overall singles wins dating back to the fall season.

In the Deacs' previous two matches, senior David Loewenthal showed signs that he may be returning to All-ACC form after battling injuries most of the year. At Virginia Tech on Feb. 25, Loewenthal played No. 6 singles and easily defeated the Hokies' Brent Wilkins, 6-2, 6-3. Earlier in the day, Loewenthal and partner Andrew Simpson took an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. Four days later against Georgia Tech, Loewenthal and Simpson battled for a 9-8 doubles victory and despite moving up to No. 4 singles, Loewenthal hardly broke a sweat defeating Tech's Joao Menano, 6-1, 6-0.
