GREENSBORO, N.C.-- Wake Forest's Derrick Spice was named ACC men's tennis performer of the week, the league announced Monday. On Wednesday, Spice helped the Demon Deacons earn a victory over Old Dominion by knocking off the nation's 13th ranked player, Izak van der Merwe, in the No. 1 singles slot. Spice and his doubles partner Brett Ross also defeated ODU's van der Merwe and Niklas Oskarsson at No. 1 doubles.
Spice continued to roll on Friday, taking a straight-sets victory over East Tennessee State's Alejandro Salazar at No. 1 singles as the Deacs pulled out a 4-3 win. The junior from North Olmsted, Ohio is 5-2 so far this season in the No. 1 singles slot, including three wins against opponents ranked in the nation's top-35. Spice also received ACC performer of the week recognition two weeks ago after knocking off 26th-ranked Jeff Kader of William and Mary.
The Demon Deacons return to action Wednesday when they travel to Blacksburg, Va. for a 4 p.m. match against Virginia Tech. The Deacs then return home for their first ACC matchup of the season against Georgia Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m.
