Virginia Is For Deacons

Feb. 9, 2006

Richmond, Va. - For the second straight weekend, the 13th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team travels to Virginia for a two-match road trip. This weekend's destination is Richmond where the Deacons face VCU on Friday and Minnesota on Saturday.

Last weekend, the Deacons posted road victories at William & Mary and Old Dominion by identical 6-1 scores to improve their record to 5-0.

The competition should be tougher in Richmond. The Rams are 7-2 and ranked 34th nationally. Earlier this season, they pushed eighth-ranked Baylor and top-ranked Virginia to the brink before losing 4-3. VCU is led by Arnaud Lecloerec, the 52nd-ranked player nationally. Last week, he defeated the nation's top-ranked singles player, Lars Poerschke of Baylor, in straight sets.

VCU leads the all-time series 12-5, but Wake Forest won last year's match 5-2 in Winston-Salem. First serve on Friday is set for 3:00 p.m.

On Saturday at 1:00 p.m., the Deacons face 35th-ranked Minnesota. The Golden Gophers are 2-3, but one of their wins was a 4-3 triumph against 24th-ranked Texas A&M. Wake Forest leads the all-time series 5-1 and captured last season's meeting 5-2 in Winston-Salem.
