The Wake Forest men's tennis team began competition
Wednesday at the ITA Region II Championships and got off to a good
start. David Loewenthal, David Bere and Brett Mauro all picked up wins
in singles. Trent Brendon teamed up with Andrew Simpson for a first
round doubles victory, as well as Bere and Mauro.
Loewenthal defeated Chris Erickson from William & Mary 6-0, 6-2 in the
first round of qualifying singles play. The freshman will face Michael
Duqette from Virginia Thursday morning in the second round.
David Bere beat Juan Jaysingh from Auburn 6-2, 7-5 in the first round of
qualifying singles play. Bere will take on North Carolina's Greg Archer
in the second round on Thursday morning.
Brett Mauro fought off Joakim Peterson of Charlotte, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 in
the first round of qualifying singles. The senior will advance to the
second round Thursday morning to play Noah Schnell from Florida State.
In doubles action Bere and Mauro teamed up to defeat Shaun Crichlow and
Alvaro Lavrisse from Houston 8-4 in the second round of qualifying
doubles, after receiving a first round bye. The Demon Deacon duo will
next take on Duke's York Allen and Ryan Heinberg on Thursday afternoon
in the third round.
Trent Brendon and Andrew Simpson waxed a pair from Florida State, Joe
Bassett and Romain Jurd 8-1 in the second round of qualifying doubles,
after receiving a first round bye. Brendon and Simpson will face Chris
Erickson and Jody Strik from William & Mary Thursday afternoon in the
third round.
Rick Phillip was the only Demon Deacon to lose, falling 6-2, 6-2 to
Brian Lubin of William & Mary. Raul Munoz and Michael Murray will begin
singles play in the main draw, Friday morning. Munoz will take on
Gustavo Gomez from East Tennessee State. Murray and Justin Kaufmann will
team up for match play doubles on Thursday against James Cameron and
John Chesworth from Furman. Munoz will join forces with Loewenthal to
take on Florian Marquardt and Fernado Sanchez of Virginia Commonwealth
on Thursday night in the first round of match doubles play.
The ITA Region II Championships will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 5.
