Wake Forest men's tennis continues action at ITA Regional Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team continued its success at the Omni Hotels ITA Region II Championships Thursday. Mike Murray and Trent Brendon both won their third straight qualifying singles match to advance to the singles main draw. Murray and doubles partner Andrew Simpson picked up a pair of doubles victories to advance to the doubles main draw, where they upset the second-seeded and 39th-ranked doubles team from Furman to advance to the Round of 16.

Murray defeated North Carolina's Geoff Boyd 7-5, 6-4 in the third round of qualifying singles play. He advances to the singles main draw where he will face Sasa Ljumic from Campbell Friday morning.

Brendon beat Peter Shults from Duke 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the third round of qualifying singles play. He advances to the singles main draw where he will face Romain Jurd from Florida State Friday morning.

Murray and Simpson beat Soufien Rechag and Olivier Zimmermann from Charleston Southern 8-4 in the second round of qualifying doubles play and then stopped Chris Chiu and Scott Peters from Maryland 9-8 in the third round to advance to the doubles main draw. Playing their third doubles match of the day, Murray and Simpson upset the second-seeded and 39th-ranked duo from Furman, James Cameron and Patrick Fillnow, 8-4 in the first round of the doubles main draw to advance to the second round where they will meet Alex Herrera and Romain Jurd from Florida State Friday night.

Trent Brendon and David Loewenthal beat Kenneth Brown and Dwayne Pagon from Howard 8-2 in the first round of the doubles main draw, but then lost 9-8 (7) in the second round to Rodrigo Laub and Matt Cloer from Florida State in the second round.

Derrick Spice will take on Zalan Kiss from Charleston Southern in the singles main draw Friday morning. David Bere will face Santiago Falla from Charleston Southern Friday morning in the first round of singles and Loewenthal is slated to play Chris Gonyer from Virginia Friday afternoon.
