Three Demon Deacons Advance At ITA Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- Wake Forest's Liron Strauss, Todd Paul and Will Chewning each won their first singles qualifying match at the ITA Regionals in Chapel Hill on Wednesday. The doubles team of Andrew Hamar and Paul also won its first two matches and will continue play on Thursday morning.

In singles qualifying, Strauss defefated American University's Jonah Fliegelman, 6-2, 7-6(5) on Wednesday. Paul advanced with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Brandon Smith of Wofford, and Chewning took a 6-2, 7-6(4) win over Hampton's Valter Paiva. Also in the singles qualifying bracket, Wake Forest's Joe Bates fell to Gary Kilduff of Winthrop in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.

On the doubles side, Bates and Strauss dropped its first match, 8-4, to Dennis Myers and Conor Taylor of NC State on Wednesday. But Hamar and Paul were able to come away with two victories on the first day. They defeated Toltsan/Wilpotte of Campbell, 8-6 and then knocked off Virginia's Miklo/Rozek team, also by a score of 8-6.

Qualifying action continues on Thursday in Chapel Hill.
