Orlando, Fla. - The No. 4 Wake Forest Demon Deacons defeated
the No. 5 Florida State Seminoles 4-2 in the first quarterfinal match at
2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championship at the Lake
Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla.
The Deacons won four singles matches to defeat the Seminoles
after dropping the doubles point. Wake Forest was victorous at No. 1,
No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. The match was clinched by Deacon
Justin Kaufmann who defeated Jarrod Owen 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
The Seminoles were led by Romain Jurd who defeated Trent Brendon
6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Florida State also won the doubles points
with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
Wake Forest improves its record to 14-9 and will advance to the
semifinals where they will face the No. 1 seeded Duke Blue Devils on
Saturday, April 21 at 10:00 a.m. With the loss, Florida State falls to
10-13 on the year.
