Twenty-fifth ranked Wake Forest traveled east on Interstate-40 to snatch a 6-1 victory from the fifth-ranked Duke Blue Devils, in ACC men's tennis action on Saturday afternoon at the Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C. With the win, the Deacons improve to 15-5 overall and set a new school record for regular season conference victories, finishing 7-3 in the ACC.
It is the Deacons first win against the Blue Devils since March 31, 1999, a stretch of eight meetings without a Deacon victory. The loss drops the Blue Devils to 17-4 overall and 7-2 in league action.
Wake Forest earned the doubles point with a pair of tiebreaker victories at the top two flights. At number one, Derrick Spice and Brett Ross upset the 43rd-ranked Duke tandem of Ludovic Walter and Jason Zimmermann, 9-8 (5), while Marius Adamski and Andrew Hamar secured a 9-8 (4) triumph over Charles Brezac and Jonathan Stokke at number two.
Spice, ranked 80th nationally in singles, followed his doubles win with a 6-4, 6-3 upset of third-ranked Walter at the number one singles slot. Wake Forest also received singles wins from Todd Paul at number two, Hamar at number three, Ross at number four and Adamski at number six.
Duke's Peter Rodrigues earned the Blue Devils' lone point of the afternoon with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Liron Strauss at the number five flight.
The Demon Deacons finish regular season conference play with a 7-3 record and will travel to the ACC Tournament scheduled for April 21-24 in Cary, N.C.
