COLUMBIA, S.C. -
The 47th ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team lost 5-2 to
No. 28 South Carolina Monday afternoon at Sam Daniel Tennis Center. The
Demon Deacons won the doubles point, but lost five of six singles
matches to the Gamecocks to lose the match.
David Bere and Andrew Simpson teamed up to beat David Nelson and Nasir
Sherazi of South Carolina 8-4 in the number three doubles match. The
Gamecock duo of Guillaume Legat and Marcus Westman took down Wake
Forest's David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon 8-5 in the number two
doubles match, leaving the decision of the doubles point on the outcome
of the number one doubles match. Raul Munoz and Mike Murray came up big
for the Deacs, handing Seth Rose and Carl Wermee a 9-8 loss, giving Wake
Forest a 1-0 lead in the match.
South Carolina evened the score in singles play, when USC's Legat, the
17th ranked singles player in the nation, defeated Munoz 6-0, 6-1 in the
number one singles match. Wake Forest took the lead again when Bere put
away Westman 6-2, 6-1 in the number four singles match, but that was the
last point the Demon Deacons would receive. South Carolina's Wermee took
out Brendon 6-1, 6-4 in the number five singles match to even the score
2-2. Murray lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to Rose in the number two match,
Loewenthal fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to Nelson in the number three match and
Rodrigo Pancheco outlasted WFU's Justin Kaufmann 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the
number six match.
The Demon Deacons fall to 12-9 on the season. Wake Forest will return to
action April 15, when they conclude the regular season at North Carolina
State at 1:00 p.m.
