WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The 47th ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team
defeated No. 63 Clemson 5-2 in a Friday evening ACC matchup at Leighton
Stadium. The Tigers won two out of three doubles matches to earn the
doubles point, but the Demon Deacons stormed back, winning five of the
six singles matches to claim the 5-2 victory in their final home match
of the season.
Raul Munoz, the lone senior for the Demon Deacons, teamed up with
freshman Andrew Simpson for the first time ever and defeated the Clemson
tandem of Eric Cohn and Jamin Thompson 8-5 in the number three doubles
match. Wake Forest dropped the other two doubles matches as Clemon's
Brad Emendorfer and Darren Knight topped David Loewenthal and Trent
Brendon in the number one doubles match and the Tiger twosome Marko
Gojanovic and Lee Taylor Walker stopped Mike Murray and Justin Kaufmann
8-5.
Down 1-0, Wake Forest fought back and won the match by winning five of
the six singles matches. Murray made quick work of Clemson's Emendorfer,
winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 in the number two match, but Munoz
lost his final home match of his career, 7-5, 6-0 to Clemson's Josh
Goffi, who's ranked 65th in the nation, in the number one match. After
losing the first set 4-6, Loewenthal battled back to beat Gojanovic 6-4,
6-2 in the number three match. Brendon picked up his 26th win of the
year, defeating Clemson's Knight 6-1, 7-6 (1) in the number four match.
David Bere squandered an early first set lead, falling behind 6-7 (8),
but then clawed back to win 6-1, 6-4 in the number five match and secure
the Demon Deacon's victory. Kaufmann extended Wake Forest's lead by
outlasting Walker 4-6, 7-5 and then 10-8 in a supertiebreaker.
The Tigers fall to 4-17 on the season and 1-5 in the ACC, while the
Demon Deacons improve to 12-7 on the year and 4-2 in the ACC. Wake
