WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The 47th ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team defeated No. 41 North Carolina 5-2 Wednesday afternoon at Leighton Stadium. The Tar Heels won the doubles point, but the Demon Deacons took five of the six singles matches to take the victory and give North Carolina its first conference loss of the season.

Wake Forest played David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon in the number one doubles match and the duo performed well, defeating North Carolina's David Cheatwood and Nicholas Monroe 8-4. Mike Murray and Justin Kaufmann lost 8-6 to UNC's Marcio Petrone and Greg Archer in the number two doubles match. Rick Phillipp got the starting nod for the Demon Deacons, where he joined Raul Munoz in the number three doubles match, but the duo lost 8-5 to Chad Riley and Trystan Meniane.

Dominating singles play, Wake Forest won matches two through six. David Bere made quick work of North Carolina's Greg Archer, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 in the number five match. David Loewenthal outlasted David Cheatwood of the Tar Heels 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the number three match and Mike Murray topped Nicholas Monroe 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the number two match. Raul Munoz lost 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 to Marcio Petrone of North Carolina in the number one match. With the score tied 3-3, Trent Brendon battled past Trystan Meniane 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 to win the number four match and seal the victory for the Demon Deacons. Justin Kaufmann then extended Wake's lead with a 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 win over UNC's Chad Riley in the number six match.

The Tar Heels fall to 8-6 on the season and 4-1 in the ACC. Wake Forest improves to 11-7 on the year and 3-2 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons will return to action Friday, April 6, when they host No. 63 Clemson at 5:00 p.m., at Leighton Stadium in the final home match of the season.
