The Wake Forest men's tennis team lost 4-3 Wednesday afternoon to No. 29 North Carolina. The 23rd-ranked Demon Deacons won the doubles point, but could only take two of the six singles matches, coming up short against the Tar Heels.
David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon, beat North Carolina's doubles team of Greg Archer and Marcio Petrone 8-6 in the No. 1 doubles match. Wake Forest's Mike Murray and Derrick Spice won the No. 2 doubles match 8-3 over Geoff Boyd and Nicholas Monroe.
Brendon and David Bere both won their singles matches for Wake Forest, but North Carolina took the rest. Bere beat Trystan Meniane 6-4, 4-6 (10-8) in the No. 2 match and Brendon defeated Geoff Boyd 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 5 match. Loewenthal fell 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 1 match to 53rd-ranked Petrone. Spice lost his first match of the season at the No. 3 position, 6-4, 6-2 to Daniel Pinchbeck, ending a 10-match winning streak. Murray fell 6-3, 6-1 to Monroe in the No. 4 match. Andy Metzler sealed the victory for the Tar Heels with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Justin Kaufmann in the No. 6 match.
Wake Forest falls to 14-3 overall and 4-2 in the ACC with the loss and North Carolina improves to 13-4 and 4-0. UNC is tied with Duke for first place in the ACC, while WFU falls to fourth behind Florida State. The Demon Deacons return to action Friday, April 5, when they travel to Clemson, SC to take on the Clemson Tigers at 5:00 p.m.
